Tonight we celebrate two Latin achievements in the 2016 Academy Awards.
Mexican-born Alejandro G. Iñárritu wins Best Director for the film “The Revenant.” Last year, Iñárritu also won the Oscar for “Birdman,” making him one of only three directors to win Best Director consecutively. He took the opportunity to praise diversity in Hollywood.
For Best Animated Short, “Bear Story” – directed by Chileans Gabriel Osorio and Pato Escala – has taken the prestigious award. The mini-film tells the heart-wrenching story of a lonely bear that longs for his missing family. Inspired by true events, it parallels the hardships of families in Chile destroyed under the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet.
Congratulations to these triumphant LatinoAmericanos. We wish them continued success and hope this inspires more talented Latin Americans to aim for greatness.
