Six months after his escape from a high-security prison, drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman has been captured, according to Mexican officials. He was found in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, during a shootout between his bodyguards and Mexican Marine Special Forces.
President of Mexico Enrique Pena Nieto announced the good news through Twitter:
“Mission Accomplished: We have him. I want to inform the Mexican people that Joaquin Guzman Loera has been detained.”
In the United States, the Drug Enforcement Administration shared in a tweet that it is “extremely pleased at the capture of Chapo Guzman. We congratulate the MX Government and salute the bravery involved in his capture.”
Guzman also has criminal charges in Chicago, New York and other U.S. cities, but it is not yet known if he awaits extradition.
